inside/out Combats Tough Travel Market with Innovative Adventure Travel Concept called 'Humanitourism'

Boulder, CO (PRWEB) July 9, 2008 -- Adventure travel innovator inside/out announced today a more meaningful alternative for adventure travelers called "Humanitourism," combining humanitarian project work with fully guided adventure travel in a variety of international locations beginning this fall.

With economic worries and the falling dollar, some Americans may be cutting back on travel this year. Most will still likely take at least one vacation, which means they may be looking for a more meaningful experience.

Humanitourism is a unique concept developed to promote longer-term relationships between communities and travelers. Previous to inside/out's entrance into the market, travelers had options to participate in volunteer vacations or adventure travel, but not excursions that truly combine both.

"I thought it was time for people who were paying to do volunteer work and giving up vacation time helping others to also have a fun and healthy experience that connects them more closely to their destination," says founder Zoe Katsulos. "inside/out's trips are designed to divide travelers' time between work and fun by providing all of the logistics and services for an assistance project as well as a multi-sport eco-adventure tour."

Inside/out aims to fill a niche between straight "voluntourism" volunteer vacation trips and strictly adventure travel trips. The Wall Street Journal Online recently reported on "voluntourism" trips that sometimes leave the traveler unfulfilled or disconnected. In many cases, the "tourism" part is virtually non-existent. Other reports have indicated that project work is sometimes designed from the providers' perspective and does not necessarily address the wants and needs of the people or community.

"Humanitourism" focuses on a more complete experience. Participants on inside/out's trips dispatch to destinations around the world to work on humanitarian projects that have been largely overlooked or underserved. Their presence is truly needed and welcomed by locals.

Following this rewarding volunteer work, travelers are treated to a guided multi-sport adventure local to the area served. The goal is to create a more intimate experience with the local culture and land so that travelers come home with more than just photos and memories, but also with a real connection to the people and places they have visited.

"Ideally, we'd love for people to return home and continue a relationship with the project and/or people visited, either with support, mentoring or even return visits," adds Katsulos.

The travel experience includes stays with local hosts or in small culturally significant accommodations and enables travelers to experience local food and culture through both the project and the adventure. Small group sizes, from 6-12 people, are designed to provide opportunities for each traveler to personally interact with the local population, hosts and each other.

Upcoming trips include:

Greece, October 11-25, 2008, to assist animal welfare workers in the struggle to improve the grossly inhumane conditions that exist for dogs there; and

Guatemala, December 27, 2008-January 8, 2009, to assist in rebuilding efforts in the village of Panajachel, devastated by Hurricane Stan in 2005 but overlooked for assistance needed to rebuild.

Additional information and trip details can be found on the website at www.theinsideandout.com.

Trips are designed for people who want to make a difference in their own lives and the lives of others. These are the "journeys for your inner self in the outdoors" that inside/out facilitates. Currently, inside/out may be the only organization offering this combination of volunteer work and guided adventure.

For those who may not be able to participate in a trip but still want to help, there are many opportunities, including donating funds or services to the organization, donating funds or supplies for a specific project, or, in some cases, writing letters of support or protest.
